We woke up to really heavy rain today in Litchfield, IL but loaded up and started south to breakfast at the Crossroads route 66 diner then on to Staunton to Henry's Rabbit Ranch. He was a really interesting guy and suggested that we have our guide book signed at all the stops we make so he got to be the first. This was a really interesting place with lots of real rabbits inside and VW rabbits outside standing on their nose. He had other memorablia such as hotel signs from the old days and lots of gas pumps and his store was an old gas station.
There was an old VW station wagon that preceded the old van we had seen at the museum in Pontiac, both owned by the same guy
As we continued toward St. Louis in the rain, I saw a man pulled over, taking a picture of the "historic route 66" sign and I felt like I was a part of a club. The man at the Rabbit Ranch had told us he had had two other couples come through this week from Indiana that were doing the whole thing too.
We crossed the Mississippi River into Missouri and arrived in St. Louis around 11:00 for our noon game at Busch Stadium-- Cubs vs Cards. It was still raining but not as bad and the crowds were gathering so we went too. The stadium is beautiful and right downtown St. Louis. We had standing room only seats and we were able to find a place at ground level to stand about the field boxes. At noon they covered the diamond and declared a rain delay due to a storm coming in 15 minutes. Two hours later they started the game in a light drizzle and then the skies cleared up and the sun came out and it warmed up 20 degrees! A beautiful day for a ballgame! About 2 innings in, this young man came by and asked if we had SRO tickets and he gave us his seats in the first base field box, row 15. FABULOUS! He couldn't stay because of the delay.
After leaving the ballpark, we headed southwest (only getting turned around a few times) and went to Ted Drewe's frozen yogurt. When we pulled up there were dozens of people there, including a group of kids in their prom clothes. We were glad that didn't stop us from going because there were several windows serving and we got right up to order our concretes. YUMMY!!!
We had decided to drive on another hour or two to find a motel and it was very pretty along that stretch. Lots of meadows and limestone cliffs and caves
We had a little more trouble today following the route because of the congestion of roads in St. Louis but we are on the right track now. We are staying in St. Clair, just east of Meramac Caverns. The storms going through Oklahmoa should be gone by the time we get there on Monday or Tuesday.
What a great idea about having your book signed!
ReplyDeleteDid the Cubs win? Those are some great seats! I'm glad you stuck around for the weather to clear up!
No, the cubs lost. It was 5 to 1 when we left at the bottom of the 8th. BUT they won the day before at the season opener 9 to 5.
ReplyDeleteWhat....no Brewery tour??!! Rose
ReplyDeletePat Kevin says you need to stop at Clinton OK while on the RT 66. Can't remember the name of the cafa. But its' the largest one there and he has been there and it is greatttt.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't find a cafe in clinton. There was a White Dog Hill Cafe that I thought it might be but it was closed on Mondays and the route 66 diner next to our hotel was closed too and had become an Italian restaurant.
